{"id":107057,"date":"2022-07-22T12:01:18","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T16:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=107057"},"modified":"2022-07-22T12:01:18","modified_gmt":"2022-07-22T16:01:18","slug":"local-art-represents-the-beauty-of-indigenous-culture-and-natural-environments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/local-art-represents-the-beauty-of-indigenous-culture-and-natural-environments\/","title":{"rendered":"Local art represents the beauty of Indigenous culture and natural environments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Local artists are showcasing their talents this summer thanks to various art projects being planned between Terrace and Kitimat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With a variety of murals being installed by the Skeena Salmon Art Festival Society, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kermode Tourism has started a tour walk, where attendees will be shown artwork around the town.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If walking outside isn\u2019t something you\u2019re interested in, the society is also opening the new Skeena Salmon Art Show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between July 29 and Aug. 31, spectators have the chance to see artwork from up to 96 artists at the Terrace Art Gallery, before the show moves to the Nisga\u2019a Museum on Sept. 3.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A total of 96 artists are involved in the art show, with 35 of those artists being indigenous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It has been important to the festival society in the past to represent the beauty of indigenous art as well as the cultural importance of the natural resources around us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hlox Majagalee is a Gitxsan artist who is contributing to the art show for a second time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Majagalee\u2019s piece displays the ecosystem that surrounds the salmon which represent the five elements: \u201cThe mothers of the ecosystems\u201d is how the artist describes it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demonstrating the natural environment in the northwest is a popular theme this summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With $20,000 in funding from the District of Kitimat, the Kitimat Public Art alliance has at least 12 murals planned for the future, with the first having the concept of \u201cOur natural environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Out of four artists, voters chose a design by Prince Rupert-based Chris Fraser, with their design of three orcas being representative of community togetherness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_107063\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107063\" class=\"wp-image-107063 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/KITMURAL-500x375.png\" alt=\"Painting of three orcas swimming on a blue background on the side of a building that has three vents\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/KITMURAL-500x375.png 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/KITMURAL-287x215.png 287w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/KITMURAL.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-107063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Fraser's mock up for Kitimat mural.
