Photo by Sara Gouda.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Young is also the first Mi\u2019kmaq-speaking lawyer in Nova Scotia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/introducing-halifax-pride-festival-eskasoni-ambassador-tuma-young\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an interview with CKDU<\/a> earlier this month, and as a member of the Eskasoni First Nation, Young said the community has progressed when it comes to LGBTQ+ acceptance and open discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen I first came out, there was an absolute nobody. It was still illegal to be gay, you can be fired for that. In my first pride March in 1988, some people had to wear a mask because they were provincial government employees so they could be identified.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Young said the pride parade was important because it\u2019s a way of giving back to the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also need to acknowledge the fact that we celebrate our own wholeness, and that we do not have to give up our own newness, or our identity as Indigenous people to be part of the queer community or the LGBTQ+ community. We celebrate who we all are. Photo by Sara Gouda.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next large event Haligonians can look forward to has been scheduled for next summer, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naigcouncil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The event will be the largest multi-sport and cultural gathering, since the pandemic started, in Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NAIG host society and the TD Halifax Jazz Festival marked the one-year countdown to the games with a celebration on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/national-indigenous-peoples-day-halifax-airport-collaboration-and-a-new-19-foot-canoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In an interview with CKDU<\/a>, Fiona Kirkpatrick Parsons, chair of NAIG said the games will welcome more than 5,000 Indigenous youths representing over 756 nations from all across Turtle Island and North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106264\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106264\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-106264\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1211-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a woman with two pride flags hanging out of a car.\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1211-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1211-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1211-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1211-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1211-320x213.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-106264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Over a dozen cars from organizations drove down the parade route and showed support to enthusiastic audiences.
