{"id":103782,"date":"2022-06-30T17:34:57","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T21:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=103782"},"modified":"2022-06-30T17:40:24","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T21:40:24","slug":"i-wanted-to-make-sure-that-i-wasnt-quiet-student-plans-protest-in-response-to-us-supreme-court-decision-on-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/i-wanted-to-make-sure-that-i-wasnt-quiet-student-plans-protest-in-response-to-us-supreme-court-decision-on-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I wanted to make sure that I wasn&#8217;t quiet&#8217;: Student plans protest in response to US Supreme Court decision on abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Pro-choice activists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/568681134850770\">plan to march in Sackville on Sunday<\/a> to protest the US Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe versus Wade.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That ruling means women no longer have a legal right to abortion in the United States.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Jenna Auguscinski, a student at Mount Allison University who is organizing this weekend\u2019s march, says she fears criminalizing abortion will increase the suicide rate among women.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cI think it's a huge issue and I think people are being pretty quiet in Canada about it, so I wanted to make sure that I wasn't quiet about it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here in New Brunswick, the provincial government\u2019s policy on abortion has also attracted criticism.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The province only subsidizes procedural or surgical abortions in three hospitals in New Brunswick, two in Moncton and one in Bathurst.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Under the Medical Services Payment Act, regulation 84-20 restricts those procedures to approved hospitals. Activists have called on the province to scrap that regulation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cIn New Brunswick, if you need an abortion, and you can't receive it in a hospital, the province doesn't pay for it,\u201d said Tasia Alexopoulos, Mount Allison\u2019s Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Coordinator. \u201cThat can be 600 to $1,200 out of pocket.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>Listen to the full interview with Auguscinski and Alexopoulos from Jun. 29, 2022:<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-103782-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Auguscinski_Alexopoulos.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Auguscinski_Alexopoulos.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Auguscinski_Alexopoulos.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The federal government previously withheld $140,000 in health transfer funds to penalize the province for violating the Canada Health Act over inadequate abortion services, although Ottawa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/new-brunswick-transfer-payments-abortion-access-1.5527586\">reportedly reimbursed<\/a> that money to help the province cope with the effects of COVID-19.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Premier Blaine Higgs, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/1882852\/avortement-debat-legalisation-acces-politique\">self-described<\/a> \u201cpro-life\u201d politician, has stated that access to abortion is adequate in New Brunswick.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Hospitals are meeting demand for abortions and the non-surgical abortion pill is getting \u201cwidespread use,\u201d he said Thursday, citing New Brunswick\u2019s regional health authorities.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_103788\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103788\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-103788\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/BlaineHiggs-500x300.jpg\" alt=\"The premier, who is wearing glasses, is shown in a well-lit office.
