{"id":103521,"date":"2022-06-30T13:41:57","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T17:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=103521"},"modified":"2022-06-30T13:41:57","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T17:41:57","slug":"improvements-in-kingstons-surgical-care-medical-director-says-solutions-in-the-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/improvements-in-kingstons-surgical-care-medical-director-says-solutions-in-the-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Improvements in Kingston&#8217;s surgical care: medical director says solutions in the works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite long wait times for surgical procedures with Kingston Health Sciences Centre, and reports of staff shortages and strain in the health care system in hospitals across the province, a medical director of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perioperative <\/span>services<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Dr. Romy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nitsch, is optimistic that things are improving for those needing care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur staffing was challenged in the surgical program at KHSC prior to the pandemic, the pandemic further challenged that\u2026As we noticed it coming, we invested significant time and finances into training, orientation and retention. So our staffing situation in the surgical program is actually looking very good right now,\u201d says Nitsch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nitsch says the wait list for procedures has grown due to Ontario Health mandating several time periods for procedure-based specialties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDuring the pandemic, we were only able to address urgent time-sensitive procedures like cancer, traumas, cardiac procedures, so many quality of life procedures got put on hold\u2026orthopedic joint surgeries, gynaecological procedures have experienced significant growth in wait lists,\u201d says Nitsch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Nitsch, thousands of patients are currently sitting on the waitlist. However, she says there are solutions in the works to address the volume of patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe need to think of the future of surgical planning in an innovative and collaborative approach\u2026We\u2019re going to be increasing rooms at our ambulatory surgical center\u2026we\u2019ve opened new surgical units to help us handle overflow of patients\u2026improved processes to get patients home in a better position faster\u2026innovative technologies to improve procedure time and length of stay.
