{"id":101943,"date":"2022-06-22T09:29:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T13:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=101943"},"modified":"2022-06-22T16:28:51","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T20:28:51","slug":"mikmaq-leaders-top-adviser-quit-n-b-systemic-racism-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/mikmaq-leaders-top-adviser-quit-n-b-systemic-racism-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"Mi&#8217;kmaq leaders, top adviser quit New Brunswick systemic racism commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div id=\"jsc_c_1y\" class=\"ecm0bbzt hv4rvrfc ihqw7lf3 dati1w0a\" data-ad-comet-preview=\"message\" data-ad-preview=\"message\">\n<div class=\"j83agx80 cbu4d94t ew0dbk1b irj2b8pg\">\n<div class=\"qzhwtbm6 knvmm38d\">\n<div class=\"kvgmc6g5 cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">A top adviser to New Brunswick's systemic racism commissioner announced his resignation on Tuesday, just as a group of Indigenous leaders withdrew from the controversial commission.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Robert Tay-Burroughs, senior advisor to commissioner Manju Varma, published his resignation letter on Twitter, saying he felt \u201ctroubled these last few weeks by the false pretences under which we are expected to do our work.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He also said \u201cit remains unclear\u201d whether the provincial government can respect the commissioner\u2019s independence or intends to accept her recommendations in good faith.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Indigenous groups have criticized the Tory-appointed commission, calling instead for a public inquiry, which would have the power to compel the government to produce information.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe were skeptical of the process, we'd asked for an inquiry into the justice system in New Brunswick from the get-go,\u201d said Chief George Ginnish of Natoaganeg, or Eel Ground First Nation.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He's co-chair of Mi'gmawe'l Tplu'taqnn Inc., or MTI, an organization representing nine Mi'kmaq communities in New Brunswick, that announced this week they would no longer participate in the commission.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Arlene Dunn downplayed the level of division between Indigenous communities and the province this week.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\"There is a lot of discussions going on with First Nations in the province right now related to our new partnership, most of which is actually not out there for public fodder, and for good reason, because we are in negotiations,\" she told reporters during a virtual scrum.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\"But I wouldn't say that the relationship is getting worse, I would actually say that it's getting better.\"<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She also denied allegations from MTI that the provincial government had suppressed a mid-term report from the commission, in which Varma called for an immediate public inquiry.
